One trick that can give you a few hours ahead (useful to eat in peace) is to create a pile of sugar not too far from where you laid your plaid: the ants are greedy and will hurtle there instead of on your lunch.

Another natural technique involves enveloping the tablecloth with talcum powder or, alternatively, with small amounts of those foods that for humans have a great scent, but the ants are disgusting: among others, coffee, lavender, leaves basil and parsley and, last but not least, the cinnamon.
